Interview with Matt Pyke

Matt Pyke
At this point, Universal Everything has been around for 3 years, 3 months, 1 day, 3 hours and 29 minutes old. The company was founded by Matt Pyke, after 8 years at the internationally renowned studio, The Designers Republic from 1996 - 2004.

To start things off, give us your educational and professional background until this day.
Technical drawing / Botanical Illustration / Landscape Painting
Type design / Record Sleeve design
The Designers Republic 1996 > 2004
Universal Everything 2004 > Tommorrow

Tell us some about your work process now at UE vs when you were working at TDR.
TDR was a very closed process, we did everything ourselves inhouse, like a secret lab. UE is a very open process, about sharing ideas and creating worldwide collaborations.
How has your reliance on modern technology and software changed since those days?
It has allowed me to build a close network of collaborators 1000s of miles apart, it allows me to live/work outside of London.

You seem to be connected with a lot of different networks / collectives, for example This is Real Art. In which ways is that beneficial?
An ever growing network allows for more creative diversity, multi-cultural influences without the need for UE offices around the world.

How do you lead a client in to a more creative/artistic path when it comes to campaigns, or even brand communication in general?
They come to UE eager for something unique, so we are given a healthy trust, and expectation to push things forward.

Who are your favorite designers/studios today?
Toxi.co.uk - Karsten Schmidt - Amazing creative programmer / interactive designer.
Flight404.com - robert hodgin - another amazing creative programmer / interactive designer
Carl and Tommi - ex-Hi-Res.net

Name your three favorite UE projects and why.
Audi - for creating a whole new work process to achieve the result.
Everyone Forever - for sharing all our ideas beyond design.
Advanced Beauty - our HD DVD Sould Sculpture project, exploration of audio-visual abstraction.

Not everyone lives or works in major cities. How is it better to work from a smaller city; like Sheffield in your case. Is this something you would recommend?
Yes, you have fresh surrounding influences to the majority of major city based designers

What advice would you give young designers today based on your personal experiences.
Keep it small and networked. Never stop using a pencil. Look beyond design for inspiration.

What do you do to get away from the computer and find other forms of inspiration?
Standing on mountains. My Family. New Scientist magazine.

Where do you want to take Universal Everything in the future?
Stay small, keep the network growing, keep evolving with every project.

Interview with Invisible Creature

invisible_creature.jpg

In 2000 Don Clark founded Asterik Studio with Demetre Arges. After seven years of hard work, awards and a huge archive of work, Don recently founded Invisible Creature together with brother Ryan Clark.

To kick things off, tell us some about the new company, the background of it and the people involved.
Ryan (my brother) and I co-founded Asterik Studio with our good friend Demetre Arges, in 2001. We’ve had an amazing 6 years, but as of July, we mutually decided to go our separate ways and to absolve the Asterik name. Ryan and I’s new firm is called Invisible Creature and our main focus is print design. We’ve been talking about doing something like this for years, and it’s exciting to finally see it come together. We still maintain great friendships with the Asterik crew and everyone is dominating with their new endeavours.

What can we expect from you in the coming year?
Hopefully more of the same. We try to tackle projects that push our sensibilities as designers and keep us motivated to create. Something new always comes up - right now we are having a blast and enjoying the ride.

What do you do to maintain a unique style?

Our inspiration runs far too deep. I can’t imagine being locked into one style or school of thought. I like Peter Saville and Storm Thorgerson just as much as Alex Steinweiss and Jim Flora. Same goes for Coltrane and Napalm Death. It’s never been something I’ve questioned. The opportunity to create works of art, or even music, presents so many options and I’d hate to think we can only take one road.

In what ways do your surroundings (ie. location, your music, family, etc.) influence your work?
As my co-workers and friends know all too well, my office and my work area is my own creative kingdom. I actually have a hard time working from home or away from the office. I am a collector of books, music, toys, magazines and odd objects. I guess it’s just part of the process. As far as music goes, and I know this sounds ludicrous, but I acquire at least 3-5 records per week, on average. I am an absolute music whore/snob and my tastes are as vast as a record store. I can’t think of any time throughout the day when music isn’t playing. As for my family, I had never known true inspiration until I had children. The experience of child birth and seeing the hand of God at work is something that cannot be put into words. My personal life is something I cherish above anything else and really trancends what I do for a living.

What do you do to get away from the computer and find other forms of inspiration?

Well, many things (spending time with our families, etc) but Ryan and I keep pretty busy with our band Demon Hunter, another creative outlet that has turned into a large part of our life.

Name your Top 3 projects

Norma Jean’s ‘O God, The Aftermath’, Bleeding Through’s ‘The Truth’ and Mae’s ‘The Everglow’ packages are pretty high on our list. Honestly, we are lucky to have a good chunk of work that we are quite proud of.

Please explain your style and what you usually try to achieve.
I’d like to think our style is pretty diverse and eclectic. We are always trying to push ourselves and out-do the last project. Our goal is to always create something that will stand the test of time. Will it be good in 50 years? Who knows, but I think that’s ultimately what we strive for.

Future plans?
To keep breathing.
