Interview with Matt Pyke

Matt Pyke
At this point, Universal Everything has been around for 3 years, 3 months, 1 day, 3 hours and 29 minutes old. The company was founded by Matt Pyke, after 8 years at the internationally renowned studio, The Designers Republic from 1996 - 2004.

To start things off, give us your educational and professional background until this day.
Technical drawing / Botanical Illustration / Landscape Painting
Type design / Record Sleeve design
The Designers Republic 1996 > 2004
Universal Everything 2004 > Tommorrow

Tell us some about your work process now at UE vs when you were working at TDR.
TDR was a very closed process, we did everything ourselves inhouse, like a secret lab. UE is a very open process, about sharing ideas and creating worldwide collaborations.
How has your reliance on modern technology and software changed since those days?
It has allowed me to build a close network of collaborators 1000s of miles apart, it allows me to live/work outside of London.

You seem to be connected with a lot of different networks / collectives, for example This is Real Art. In which ways is that beneficial?
An ever growing network allows for more creative diversity, multi-cultural influences without the need for UE offices around the world.

How do you lead a client in to a more creative/artistic path when it comes to campaigns, or even brand communication in general?
They come to UE eager for something unique, so we are given a healthy trust, and expectation to push things forward.

Who are your favorite designers/studios today?
Toxi.co.uk - Karsten Schmidt - Amazing creative programmer / interactive designer.
Flight404.com - robert hodgin - another amazing creative programmer / interactive designer
Carl and Tommi - ex-Hi-Res.net

Name your three favorite UE projects and why.
Audi - for creating a whole new work process to achieve the result.
Everyone Forever - for sharing all our ideas beyond design.
Advanced Beauty - our HD DVD Sould Sculpture project, exploration of audio-visual abstraction.

Not everyone lives or works in major cities. How is it better to work from a smaller city; like Sheffield in your case. Is this something you would recommend?
Yes, you have fresh surrounding influences to the majority of major city based designers

What advice would you give young designers today based on your personal experiences.
Keep it small and networked. Never stop using a pencil. Look beyond design for inspiration.

What do you do to get away from the computer and find other forms of inspiration?
Standing on mountains. My Family. New Scientist magazine.

Where do you want to take Universal Everything in the future?
Stay small, keep the network growing, keep evolving with every project.

Julian Red

Julian Red

Julian Red is a fashion brand from Gothenburg, Sweden and was founded by Mattias Lind a couple years back. They are becoming more and more successful. I saw a few stores in the US that picked up the line.

This site is pretty sick. The collection is even better. I get both Hedi Slimane and Kim Jones vibes.
